During the holiday season, we often think about gift giving. It seems like it was just yesterday that my own college age sons were making their lists for Santa. Their “Dear Santa” letters had a carefully thought out list of toys they wanted. Tonka trucks, roller blades, skateboards, basketballs, Pokémon cards, Lego’s, Beanie Babies, Hot Wheels, Game Boy, the latest electronic toy….the lists went on and on. Truthfully, by the time the big day arrived, they were delighted to open the simplest of gifts – it was more about the experience of tearing open the package to see what was inside that enthused them the most.
Since I know how joyful a holiday can be for the little ones – this holiday I still want to continue the spirit of giving to a young child. Each member of my family will pick out and donate a toy to the Toys for Tots program. We will bring these toys to an official Drop Off Center at one of 9 participating Standard Bank branches.
From October through December, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys to distribute as Christmas gifts to needy children. Toys for Tots’ primary goal is to deliver a message of hope to needy children, helping them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Giving a child a shiny new toy at Christmas is a wonderful way to convey this message of hope.
